Help Preparing for the SAT
WHAT IS THE SAT? The SAT is a standardized test that is divided into Math and Verbal sections. The test is administered to high school juniors and seniors several times in both the fall and spring. Test scores are reported on a scale from 400 to 1600 and the national average is 1000. Colleges and universities require the SAT (or ACT) from incoming applicants.
MASTERING THE VERBAL SECTION: This course will emphasize most commonly occurring vocabulary words, as well as extensively covering learning techniques for the analogy, sentence completion and reading comprehension sections. Students will practice strategies and will complete practice sets from actual SAT exams.
MASTERING THE MATH SECTION: This course will review the main components of the math sections of the SAT: arithmetic, algebra and geometry. Furthermore, students will learn the best ways to solve the problems quickly and efficiently while avoiding the ways the SAT "tricks" students into picking incorrect answers. Students will also practice actual math problems from SAT exams.
TAKING THE ACTUAL SAT EXAM: Sophomores preparing for the PSAT are encouraged to attend classes, and an extra session for the Writing section will be arranged as needed. Three actual practice tests are administered:
- Before the class begins to assess where students need the most improvement
- In the middle of the course to gauge progress
- At the end of the course to evaluate overall improvement
COURSE SCHEDULE. Classes will provide 30 hours of instruction (not including the 3 three-hour practice exams). Day and evening courses will meet for five to six weeks for two or three hours each week, with most practice tests on Saturdays. Starting dates to be determined by number of registrants. Make-up classes and additional one-to-one support are available.
