Help Preparing for the ACT
WHAT IS THE ACT? The ACT is a standardized test which assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. Test scores are reported on a scale from 1 to 36 and the national average is 21.1. Colleges and universities require the ACT (or SAT) from incoming applicants.
MASTERING THE ENGLISH SECTIONS: The Writing Test consists of 75 multiple choice questions that tests usage, mechanics and rhetorical skills. The Reading Test is 40 multiple choice questions based on passages including prose fiction, social studies, humanities, and natural sciences. The best way to approach these questions is to read all the answer choices carefully as nothing is incorrect but you have to select the best answer. Students will practice strategies and complete in practice sets from actual ACT exams.
MASTERING THE MATH/SCIENCE SECTION: The ACT Math Test covers topics from a typical high school math class. Geometry questions account for a greater percentage of the ACT Math Test than do any other type of question. It is a 60 minute section with 60 questions, which are all multiple choice, and the use of a calculator is allowed. The Science Test is 40 multiple choice questions referring to Science-based passages. Students will practice strategies and complete in practice sets from actual ACT exams.
TAKING THE ACTUAL ACT EXAM: Three practice tests are administered:
- Before the class begins to assess where students need the most improvement
- In the middle of the course to gauge progress
- At the end of the course to evaluate overall improvement
